Sophisticated in a Slip

As you may have noticed, undergarments are playing a huge role in fashion today. I was inspired by the New Years Eve scene of Sex and the City when Carrie runs to Miranda’s house in the middle of the night in only a slip and fur coat. While this may have been a taboo trend in the past, it is seen on runways all over the world and sold in all types of stores from low to high fashion.

Many unflattering undergarment trends are taking to the streets as well. For example, the crop top trend has turned a bandeau into a shirt. Although this is something I will never be a part of, people are continuing to wear bralettes in the place of regular shirts. This trend is much more flattering without showing too much skin.

When it comes to the slip dress, it is important to dress it up to keep the look sophisticated so you do not appear sleazy. Since I usually opt for the more edgy looks, I paired mine with a faux leather jacket, textured purse, and sock booties (another new trend!). Another way to play with the trend without appearing too uncovered is by wearing a short or long sleeved shirt underneath your dress.

My favorite details in a slip dress are a hint of lace as well as a draped fabric. As a little update to the usual silky slip dress, I purchased a polyester version in a teal color with a black lace at the neckline and high-low hem. Check below to see how I styled it:

Also, here are some more examples of how to wear slip dresses as seen in the streets as well as on the catwalk from the design house of Dior to Topshop:
